前置知识

11 项必需的前置知识(一直追溯到底)

你将学会

  • Locate primary sources and surveys for a topic using arXiv, zbMATH Open or MathSciNet, and follow a chain of citations.
  • Reconstruct the omitted steps of a published proof and list the results it depends on.
  • Classify the claims in a paper as proved, cited, conjectured or heuristic, and judge what is genuinely open.

定义

  • A preprint is a paper made public before, or without, peer review.
  • A survey summarises a field and its literature; a research article claims new results.
  • A conjecture is a statement believed but not proved; an open problem is a question with no accepted resolution.

定理

  • Peer review lowers but does not remove the chance of error; published proofs are sometimes corrected or withdrawn.
  • Computational evidence is not proof: Goldbach's conjecture has been verified for all even numbers up to 4 × 10¹⁸ and remains unproved.

常见误解

  • Treating a preprint's claims as established before the community has checked them.
  • Expecting to understand every line of a paper on a first, linear reading.
  • Assuming a conjecture with strong numerical support must be true: the Mertens conjecture was disproved in 1985 although it holds for every n that has been checked.
